  • A solo-vehicle crash blocked the eastbound lane of Highway 178 around 5:45 a.m. September 8 — a fire was also spotted and road reopening details have not been provided.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A 53-year-old Bakersfield man named Steven Paul Garcia was charged on August 26 when officers in Fresno County stopped him and found 22 pounds of methamphetamine in his vehicle as part of Operation Take Back America — carried out by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Bakersfield Police, and DEA.  Bakersfield Now
  • On August 30, RBI Services Inc. on Flightpath Way and Flyover was robbed of about $15,000 in tools when two men cut the lock at 7:05 a.m.—employees discovered the theft on September 2 and police later received a report while the business upgraded its security with a Ring camera.  Bakersfield Now
  • Joe Ducey from the Better Business Bureau warns that text message scams using artificial intelligence mimic family members to trick people into sending money—recipients are advised to verify sender details before transferring funds.  23ABC News
  • Maya Hernandez, a Visalia mother charged with leaving her children in a hot car—causing the death of her 1-year-old in June—has had her trial postponed and will return to court on October 6 for charges including involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty.  Bakersfield Now

  • Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh appeared on the inaugural episode of Arc Bakersfield on Monday morning to talk about homelessness and her plans to get more resources from the California big city mayors group. Her discussion highlighted the challenges residents face and the steps being taken to help those in need.  Bakersfield Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kern Behavioral Health officials said 988 is a lifeline for mental health help and that Monday marked 988 Day to remind locals that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. The hotline received nearly 44,000 calls in California this July—Kern crisis counselors complete 200 hours of training to support the community.  23ABC News
