  • Bakersfield community members held a breakfast fundraiser (raising $25,000) at the KLEA Banquet Hall Saturday morning to support Kern County Sheriff’s Deputy Jasmine Francisco, who battled cancer and faced over $50,000 in home repair costs from black mold in her new home. The funds helped cover medical bills and costs for alternative housing (including attorney fees and mold testing) as she began moving in with her daughters.  23ABC News

  • Battalion Chief James Agee, a Kern County firefighter, was seriously injured when his pickup truck rolled over on the Canyon Fire in LA and Ventura Counties on Friday, Aug. 8—he received emergency care on scene and was taken to Henry Mayo Hospital in Newhall.  23ABC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews are battling the Richbar Fire on Highway 178 near the Richbar Picnic Area — the vegetation fire started around 6 p.m. and has grown to 80 acres while officials say it poses no threat to structures as they closed canyon access.  23ABC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kern County Department of Human Services issued a statement after protests took place outside its facility early Friday morning when demonstrators demanded an investigation into Child Protective Services following the tragic death of 8-year-old Genesis Ariah Mata. The agency expressed deep sorrow for the loss and said it could not share more details due to the ongoing investigation — it urged anyone suspecting abuse to use the 24-hour hotline.  Bakersfield Now
