ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, May 10 at 8:50 p.m. near Valley Plaza Mall a two-vehicle crash overturned an SUV that killed 23-year-old Jesus Alexis Beltran Aragon while injuring two other men—police are investigating possible drug or alcohol involvement.  Bakersfield Now

  • Bakersfield police are asking the community to help find a missing at-risk 12-year-old girl who was last seen on May 13th at 9:27 a.m. near Panama Lane and Akers Road—she is Hispanic, 5’5” tall, weighs 115 pounds and was wearing a white shirt, black sweat pants and no shoes, and anyone with information should call 6613277111.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Bakersfield Police Department is asking the public for help finding 16-year-old Jakely Nataly Osoriovargas, who was last seen on May 13 at 7:20 a.m. on the 300 block of Truxtun Avenue near V Street — she is considered at risk.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kern County SEIU workers plan a strike on June 3 and 4 to demand higher wages and better funding for public services after they rejected a 3% raise offer. County officials say funds are limited — union leaders say the strike is needed — and mediation continues.  23ABC News
  • Today, protesters gathered at Kern Medical to voice concerns over potential Medicaid cuts—urging Congressman David Valadao to vote against any reductions. Army veteran and Bakersfield resident Devon Newton said the proposed cuts could harm patients who rely on Medicaid for essential care.  Bakersfield Now
  • On Tuesday, county officials warned the Board that Kern County could lose $529 million in federal funding for programs such as social services, workforce training and child support services—officials noted that cuts already forced hiring and spending freezes in the public health department. Officials said reduced federal support may compel further service cuts that will affect local residents.  KGET

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bakersfield received a $22.8 million grant from the State of California’s Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure to fight substance abuse in the city and Kern County. The funds will support a 65-bed treatment facility for adults and perinatal women at the Country Inn and Suites on Wible Road — the facility will be maintained with opioid settlement dollars and managed by Kern County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services.  KUZZ
