COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Although rainy weather fell on Christmas Day, The Mission at Kern County hosted its annual Community Christmas Meal in Bakersfield to offer warm meals and holiday gifts to families in need; volunteers and local groups helped serve the community.  23ABC News
  • A retrospective of Kern County highlights a new resource center at Bakersfield College that supports veterans, a colorful community tradition, and a local woman spreading joy through dance & inspiring kindness. The review celebrates our county’s spirit of generosity and connection.  23ABC News
  • Residents near the Borel Fire (burn scar) area are alerted as Kern County Fire Department warns of flood and mudslide risks amid heavy rain and wind today. Both PG&E and Southern California Edison reported outages affecting roughly 2,000 customers and advised keeping a safe distance from downed power lines.  Bakersfield Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Caltrans said flooding and debris forced full closures on Westbound Highway 58 at Exit 172 and Exit 165 near Mojave, leaving no direct route from Mojave to Tehachapi as officials assess damage.  Bakersfield Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sankofa Collective invites the community to celebrate African culture with its annual Kwanzaa celebration beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend (the event will feature traditional music, dance, and foods).  Bakersfield Now
  • Kern County earned the nickname Golden Empire — a label honoring its gold rush, oil boom, and strong agriculture. A 1950s pamphlet by the Kern County Board of Trade first promoted the title to boost local pride and economic strength.  KVPR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hard Rock Tejon Casino boosted the regional economy with $35M in jackpots and created over 1,100 jobs since its November opening—officials say the venue has become a key contributor.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kern County is providing free sand at nine locations including Bakersfield and Tehachapi to help residents protect their properties ahead of heavy rainfall; they must bring shovels and sandbags as empty bags are available at local hardware stores.  23ABC News
  • PG&E said outages climbed from 40,000 to 125,000 during last night's winter storm, with about 2,000 in the Central Valley including 275 in Kern County, and SoCal Edison said crews handled outages near Tehachapi with 113 affected and near Delano with 36.
