COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CAP-K held a walk-up food distribution outside the Kern County Human Services building, assembling food boxes with perishables, nonperishables, and snacks for about 300 families in need ahead of the holiday season.  23ABC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Padre Hotel is a historic 198-room Spanish Colonial Revival property at 18th and H Streets that opened in 1928 and hosted movie stars such as Clark Gable + Carole Lombard. Once derelict and now revived as a boutique hotel, it anchors downtown revitalization in Bakersfield.  KVPR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kern County Public Works set up nine sandbag stations (Bakersfield, Frazier Park, Lake Isabella, Lamont, Lebec, McFarland, Mountain Mesa, Tehachapi and Wofford Heights) as the county braced for heavy rainfall, and residents are advised to bring their own shovels and sandbags, which are available at local hardware stores.  KUZZ

  • Kern County health officials warn that strong winds stirring up dust raise valley fever risks. Residents with pre-existing conditions should limit outdoor activities, wear N95 masks, and monitor weather forecasts while officials note that upcoming rain may help ease dust levels + later promote fungal growth.  Bakersfield Now
  • Doctors in Kern County warn flu cases and pediatric infections are rising as positivity rates jumped from 2.34% to 11.86% on Dec. 18 — they expect more patients following the Christmas holidays. They advise residents to get vaccinated to guard against severe symptoms.  23ABC News
