  • On Friday, Kern County celebrated National Adoption Day when 49 new families were approved at the Juvenile Justice Center—dozens dressed in their Sunday best waited for judge approval.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • The annual Food and Ton of Toys Holiday Drive is underway as CAPK and JJO Charities collect donations of food, toys, and coats for Kern County families until November 25th (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) to meet urgent needs this holiday season.  23ABC News
  • The seventh annual 23ABC Community Baby Shower helped Kern County families in need by collecting over 500 diapers, 275 packages of baby wipes, more than 1,000 baby clothes and 15 donations of baby formula despite rainy weather — donations that will support women and children facing crises. Local groups and nonprofits also contributed a $1,500 check to ease the high cost of baby essentials.  23ABC News
  • Delano has opened its first temporary ice skating rink at the Eleventh Avenue Community Center, which is available for public skating from November 21 to January 11 (operating Wednesday through Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.). City officials said the rink uses a synthetic surface for safety and offers tickets with skate rentals and an inflatable igloo for younger children, with plans for a permanent facility in the future.  Bakersfield Now

  • Hard Rock Tejon Casino reported that guests won $10 million in jackpots over ten days (November 11 to November 21) as casino president Chris Kelley said the win showed high guest excitement on its 150,000-square-foot gaming floor with over 2,000 slot machines and 50 table games.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Thieves stole expensive holiday equipment — lights, ornaments, and electrical cords — early Thursday morning from Circle Park in Kernville, prompting community organizers to launch a donation drive to keep their Christmas tradition alive.  23ABC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A local price check finds that Bakersfield shoppers will pay an average of $60.77 for 10 Thanksgiving items, which is higher than the national $50.21 but lower than California's $66.32 based on data gathered from two stores (Blue Fig Farms and FoodMaxx). The report noted that Blue Fig Farms had limited staples costing $17.80 including a Halal turkey priced near $29.72 while FoodMaxx offered turkey around $35 with four items totaling $42.97.  23ABC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rains last weekend marked the third-highest November rainfall in the region and eased drought conditions in Kern County. President Todd Snider of the Kern County Farm Bureau said the rain benefited almond and pistachio growers but may delay grape and wheat planting — flooding and fog are also expected.  Bakersfield Now

  • Bakersfield City Council approved a zoning change for a planned water park, golf, and shopping facility and began an environmental review—city officials clarified that the water park project is not yet approved. The developer said the complex might open in a couple of years, while some residents worry about traffic issues.  23ABC News

  • Local travel experts advise families to plan extra time during the holiday season—allowing for flight delays, heavy traffic, and other unexpected issues. Bill LeManque and Officer D.C.
