  • In Kern County, the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center helps about 350 families each month by giving new parents needed items and classes — 23ABC's annual Baby Shower event will take donations on November 20th at 321 21st Street — donation sites include Anthem Welcome Center, Brooks Brothers Interiors and Tri-Counties Bank locations.  23ABC News
  • The North of the River Recreation and Parks District invites the community to honor veterans with its 2nd Annual Flag Planting event at Liberty Garden in Liberty Park on November 10— the event will begin at 9 a.m. with a ceremony featuring the National Anthem and Taps. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hard Rock Tejon Casino revealed its giant guitar sign on Friday and held a tribal blessing that set hopes high for the new casino near Bakersfield. The casino will open at noon on Thursday and is expected to bring two million visitors each year (the 57-foot guitar took 78 days and 4,000 man-hours to build).  Bakersfield Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Buena Vista Edible Schoolyard learned gardening and olive harvesting by picking olives from over 350 trees—an annual tradition that teaches the seed-to-table process. The harvested olive oil is used in school kitchens for cooking and nutrition lessons.  23ABC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge ordered SNAP benefits to be reinstated by Friday, and Kern County residents noticed the funds had been restored (CalFresh) so families could buy food in November. Local aid groups said they will watch if the benefits continue in December as the shutdown may affect future support.  23ABC News
  • Hundreds of flights were canceled nationwide after the FAA announced cuts at 40 major airports—Meadows Field in Bakersfield saw two American Airlines flights canceled on Friday, one headed to Phoenix and one arriving from Phoenix.  Bakersfield Now
  • Two departing American Airlines flights and one arrival at Meadows Field were canceled yesterday due to FAA flight cuts aimed at easing air traffic controller shortages. Officials said flight limits will rise to 6% on Nov. 11, 8% on Nov. 13, and 10% on Nov. 14—adding to delays as travelers adjust their plans.  23ABC News
  • PG&E reported Friday evening that 5,222 customers in northwest Bakersfield have been without power since 7:32 p.m. (affecting areas from Olive Drive to Zachary Road north of 7th Standard Road) while the cause is under investigation (with no estimated restoration time available).  Bakersfield Now
