COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Foster care program Holiday Cottage has celebrated 38 years of granting wishes to children in foster care and expects over 700 requests this holiday season. A car show and donation drive will be held on Saturday at 3043 Wilson Road—organizers say the event will bring joy to local foster youth.  23ABC News
  • In November, the Community Action Partnership of Kern is providing food, shelter, and support for local families during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. The group urges residents to help meet the growing community needs.  Bakersfield Now
  • Local officials will honor veterans at Tuesday's Veterans Day Parade in downtown Bakersfield as marching bands, school cheer squads and drill teams perform — the event promises to draw community support for military service. Community members are set to attend and show respect for local heroes.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • Today, the Bakersfield City School District uses the McKinney-Vento program to support homeless youth by offering rides, clothing, school supplies, and food to help them stay in school. The program aids about 1,800 students (with totals possibly as high as 15,000) and gives them a safe space to learn during the day.  23ABC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • State Market in Delano lowered pork and chicken prices to support families during the government shutdown. The store sold over 1,000 pounds in two days and will keep prices low until Thanksgiving or until the government reopens (an effort to ease costs for locals).  23ABC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Award-winning actor BD Wong spoke at California State University, Bakersfield on November 5 during the Kegley Institute Fall Lecture—he shared his journey overcoming casting bias and promoting inclusion. The lecture, part of the university's Out-tober series, was supported by Valley Strong Credit Union—The Kegley Family—and the Office of the Provost.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bakersfield city officials have released the Sustainable Opportunities Advancing Resilience report for public review to gather comment on plans to improve air quality, public health, energy costs, and job opportunities. The project began in January with community workshops held from February to October — it is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program.  23ABC News
