COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kern County report—supported by the Kern Community Foundation—examined the status of women and girls and showed that education and incomes have improved while health care access and wage gaps remain problems. Nonprofits can now apply for a $100,000 grant to fund programs that help women and girls in Kern County.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Community Action Partnership of Kern is providing supplemental food support to Taft SNAP recipients who lost CalFresh benefits due to the federal government shutdown at Franklin Field. The giveaway runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on November 6 and residents should bring their EBT card (required for entry), with another event planned on November 20.  KUZZ
  • The 2025 St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway accepts Last Chance Prize entries until November 14th and offers a $5,000 VONS gift card with each $100 ticket that also enters a drawing for a new home at 1405 Hobbs Lane in the Golden Heights Community built by John Balfanz Homes. Open house tours run on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. until November 16th, and the home will be given away live on November 21 on KBAK-CBS — all proceeds support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  Bakersfield Now

  • Joe Ducey from the Better Business Bureau warned Bakersfield small business owners to check each invoice carefully before paying to avoid being tricked by scammers. He explained that fake bills—sent by mail or email—may request payment for services not ordered and can cost companies billions.  23ABC News

  • Monday evening, the Foo Fighters surprised Bakersfield fans with a pop-up concert at the Nile Theatre, announced just a day before—tickets were sold solely in-person—and many fans waited hours in line to secure entry.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CAPK organizes daily food distribution for EBT recipients in Kern County as federal funding returns to food assistance programs—officials said funding details remain unclear.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • CAP-K and the National Guard distributed food at the Kern County Fairgrounds on Monday for families affected by the government shutdown. Officials said the effort served between 2,000+ and 3,000 people with essential items like rice, bread and canned goods.  23ABC News
  • The Kern County Coroner’s Office is asking the public to help find next of kin for 65-year-old Mariana Cervantes Flores, who died on August 3 in Bakersfield — efforts to locate her family have not worked so far.   • Bakersfield realtors say the housing market is slowing amid rising inflation and an ongoing government shutdown — active listings grew from about 800 last year to over 1,000 now as buyer demand dropped by 22%. Experts say delays in federal loan programs are making it harder for buyers to secure loans and for sellers to close deals.  23ABC News

  • Taft College becomes the first junior college in California to get a glove deal for its baseball team with custom gloves from GameDay Gloves + the deal is expected to boost recruiting efforts.
