ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Oct. 19, a crash on Shadow Hills Drive occurred when a 17-year-old driving at 80 mph lost control on a steep embankment, killing one of the twin passengers and injuring the other, while a separate incident that day in Tulare County involved an unlicensed 18-year-old whose head-on collision killed a 52-year-old woman.  Bakersfield Now

  • Bakersfield Police Department announced road closures on Truxtun Avenue (between H Street and Chester Avenue) and Eye Street (from 17th Street to the parking lot at 1601 Truxtun Avenue) for its annual HalLAWeen trick-or-treat event on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Kern County Water Agency urged federal officials to shift funds from the high-speed rail project to the Delta Conveyance Project that provides water to 27 million people and supports 750,000 acres of farmland. Agency leaders said the change would boost water reliability for local farms and communities — despite legal questions.  23ABC News
  • If the shutdown continues, the USDA said SNAP benefits will not be issued on November 1 for 110,000 Kern County families—local food banks are preparing to double services and set up distribution points for CalFresh users and unpaid federal workers.  23ABC News
  • A halfway house in east Bakersfield missed renewing its government contract last week and may get another chance at public funding if county officials approve a new plan.  The Bakersfield Californian

  • Mercy Southwest Hospital is adding the Thomas M. Hardt Tower — a $47 million expansion that will add 106 beds, six operating rooms, and advanced cardiac and neonatal care units. The project will also bring 240 new jobs and more health care options to Kern residents when it opens this fall.  23ABC News
