COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Banducci’s Family Pumpkin Patch in Old River has offered pumpkins, a petting zoo, pony rides, a corn maze and photo spots for over 30 years — drawing families with its fun, rustic charm. The attraction will remain open until Halloween — closing at 4 p.m. on the holiday.  Bakersfield Now
  • Kern River Bike Patrol volunteers work on the Bakersfield bike path—offering first aid and bike repairs to help cyclists in need. Created this summer by the city and its Recreation and Parks Department, the group has logged over 100 hours with 10 volunteers and is seeking more members to expand its support.  23ABC News
  • Turtwig (a medium mixed breed dog with two differently colored eyes) is available for adoption at Kern County Animal Services after being held for about one month due to high shelter capacity.  23ABC News

  • California State Bakersfield announced that it will launch a light lager called Runner Gold—developed with Temblor Brewing Company and Lengthwise Brewing Company—for sale at Icardo Center home games in basketball, volleyball and wrestling starting October 28, and proceeds will support the Athletics Department.  Bakersfield Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service has lifted fire restrictions for Sequoia National Forest as cooler weather allows campfires on the Kern River, Hume Lake and Western Divide Ranger Districts—visitors should check local rules and renew their campfire permits before they expire on December 31.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bakersfield celebrated the completed Kern River Canal Backup Weir with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday morning near Coffee Road Bridge, and the new structure now controls flood water and diverts Kern River flows while adding a bike path linking local trails—improving water management and recreation.  23ABC News
  • The Kern County Fire Department received a $90,500 grant so it can buy new extraction equipment (Jaws of Life) to rescue people trapped in crashes. The funding comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and will boost emergency response times.  Bakersfield Now
  • City of Bakersfield announced that highway on-ramp closures on Highway 58 will affect travel tonight as crews pour bridge deck concrete—eastbound 58 at Highway 99 will be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Friday. Detours for the westbound connector and the Ming Avenue ramp will use alternate roads—drivers should plan for delays.  Bakersfield Now
  • Kern County officials said that if the federal shutdown continues, CalFresh food aid may stop in November—leaving 110,000 local families at risk while county and city leaders work to secure continued support.  23ABC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaiser Permanente, in collaboration with local agencies, will host a drug take-back, recycling, and free flu vaccination event on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Ming Avenue offices (8800 Ming Avenue) to provide Kern County residents with a safe way to dispose of medications and other items.  Bakersfield Now
  • A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that introducing peanuts between 4 and 6 months lowers the risk of developing peanut allergies in children—local doctors advise parents to consult with their pediatrician about this new guidance. Additional research is still needed to further reduce the occurrence of food allergies.  23ABC News

  • CSUB held a media day on Wednesday for its basketball teams, welcoming new men's coach Mike Scott who replaced Rod Barnes and introducing several new players for the women’s team.
