EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ CalKIDS gives all babies born after July 2022 a savings account starting at $175 to help save for college or career training — the program has enrolled more than 5 million children and Kern County parents have already claimed nearly $2 million in funds. 23ABC News
- ➤ Students from Kern High School District took part in a full-day filmmaking workshop at Frontier High Library on Tuesday—rotating through stations for screenwriting, camera operation, lighting, sound, acting, makeup and special effects. - ➤ Golden Empire Transit will boost bus service in early 2026 by increasing Route 21 frequency — now scheduled to run every 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. for trips connecting California State University, Bakersfield and Bakersfield College — and by launching the new T1 pilot route linking downtown and Old Town Kern with buses every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; the final decision will be made at a November board meeting. 23ABC News
- ➤ Today, the California Department of Social Services said that CalWORKs money is safe for November while October CalFresh benefits are not affected—if the shutdown goes on, November CalFresh could be delayed. The department will send text and email alerts from tonight after 5:30 p.m.—these alerts will update beneficiaries and ensure that applications keep being processed. Bakersfield Now
- ➤ A weir on the Kern River in west Bakersfield reopened Tuesday after high river flows caused damage to increase flood protection in the area. Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh and city officials honored engineer Richard Meyer at a ceremony and noted the $5.5 million project features automated gates and a bike and pedestrian path (with $1.3 million from grants) to efficiently manage water flows.
