COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Carlos Baldovinos of The Mission at Kern County hosted a 24-hour livestream on October 10 that let community members share their ideas about homelessness. He said more than 60 people, including neighbors and city leaders, joined the conversation—creating a town hall style event.  23ABC News
  • Leadership Bakersfield completed the 'Little Readers, Future Leaders' project on Thursday at the Southwest Library to create a new children's area with murals, play areas, and updated learning materials that aim to boost literacy among Kern County residents. The project was launched after data showed that only 38% of residents met state literacy standards in 2024.  23ABC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new immigration documentary will be shown at CSUB and BC; the film—opening with President Ronald Reagan's January 19, 1989 speech given near the end of his presidency—explores immigration history.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • The Greek Food Festival began Friday at St. George Greek Orthodox Church near downtown Bakersfield and continues today with live music, dancing, and dishes like gyro sandwiches, feta fries, and pastries — the event will also run Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a $5 admission fee.  Bakersfield Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Chevron said it will lay off 75 more workers from its Bakersfield headquarters and Kern River Field on Oct. 23 and will give them 60 days notice. The move follows a previous layoff of 50 employees and comes with severance pay, continued health coverage, access to education and training, and outplacement assistance.  Bakersfield Now

  • The CBCC held a Pink Party in Wonderland on Thursday to honor breast cancer patients and survivors—offering them fun activities, education, and local resource information during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  23ABC News
