  • The City of Bakersfield upgraded Saunders Park over two years using the Art in California Parks Program Grant, adding murals, new trees, benches, street lights, skating rink updates + new walking paths to improve the park for families. A celebration event will be held on Friday October 10th from 5:30-8:30 to welcome the community.  23ABC News

  • Fire crews fought a blaze near Taft Highway in south Bakersfield Tuesday afternoon — flames were seen in a field near Ramos Avenue.  Bakersfield Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CSUB President Vernon B. Harper Jr. stated that misinformation about criminal allegations in the Athletics Program is false—he confirmed that all claims were reported to the Bakersfield Police Department, FBI, and other agencies—and the university acted on concerns only when further claims led to the arrest and separation of former coach Kevin Mays, with investigations still ongoing.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Tehachapi say the water district is sending most of the State Water Project water to agriculture while the city gets too little for residents and local projects. The dispute—ongoing for three years—has led to lawsuits and efforts for a settlement between the contesting sides.  Bakersfield Now
  • BPD Chief Greg Terry will drop by 23ABC on the first Tuesday of each month to discuss topics such as staffing levels, response times, and vandalism at historic Union Cemetery—he will also update on the investigation of shots fired into a home in southwest Bakersfield and review community policing initiatives.  23ABC News
  • California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Tuesday called on tenants to report unsafe and unsanitary rental conditions including issues with Mike Nijjar’s companies — one of which, Equity Management, operates 1,800 rentals in Bakersfield. His office filed a lawsuit in June and will use the reports to enforce tenant rights and improve living conditions.  23ABC News
  • The City of Bakersfield's Solid Waste Division said residents can drop off large unwanted items for free at a bulky item event coming Saturday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon — at the Bakersfield Municipal Airport.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Kern County Board of Supervisors approved the DHS' selection of the Social Policy Institute — a nonprofit linked with SDSU — to review child welfare services. The institute will begin evaluating policies and hotline calls next month and will share its findings by May 2026.  Bakersfield Now
  • PG&E will build a new electrical substation in southeast Bakersfield and upgrade the city’s power transmission lines if it receives state approval—this project will boost local energy capacity when approved.  The Bakersfield Californian

  • Bakersfield 14-year-old Tremendous Higuera became the international boxing champion in Oxnard after winning 25 fights—he trains two hours a day in his backyard and helps teach younger kids at a local nonprofit boxing academy. He aims to win more international titles and become a pro boxer.  23ABC News
