COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The CAPK Veterans and Supportive Services Program is asking for clothing donations to help homeless and at risk veterans for the Annual Kern County Veterans Stand Down, which will be held on October 9 at Stramler Park in Bakersfield—donations can be dropped off at 1617 30th Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until October 8.  Bakersfield Now
  • Today at 4 p.m., The Patch opens at the corner of Coffee Rd and Brimhall to offer families fun with inflatables, slides, games, horse rides, face painting, a petting zoo, and a new Super Slide that requires five tickets—beer and wine served by the Bakersfield Firefighters Historical Society will benefit the community. Admission is $5 for adults while children three and under, military, and first responders get free entry.  Bakersfield Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • KCSO’s China Lake Mountain Rescue Group rescued a person stuck in the desert north of Randsburg on September 19—air support and ground vehicles reached the remote area to safely return the individual to Johannesburg.  Bakersfield Now

  • Hard Rock International and the Tejon Indian Tribe announced that Hard Rock Casino Tejon will open on November 13 off Highway 99 in Mettler, less than 15 miles south of Bakersfield—this new casino will create thousands of construction jobs and 1,000 permanent roles while offering a large gaming floor and music memorabilia.  Bakersfield Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Bakersfield residents have begun their early Halloween shopping as national spending is expected to top $13 billion this season—with more than $4 billion earmarked for costumes reported by local shops like Bakersfield Costumes in Oildale, where families are buying early to secure deals and budgets range from around $30 to $70 per costume. Spirit Halloween stores will remain open until two days after the holiday to serve the early shoppers.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government said it may soon let people file new DACA applications but a judge must first approve the move. Immigration attorneys warned that approval is not guaranteed—scammers might try to cheat applicants into paying fees.  23ABC News
  • The City of Bakersfield will host community meetings to discuss plans for replacing its aging wastewater treatment facilities—councilmembers and staff will take public input at several locations on October 6, 13, 15, 16, 21, and 27.  Bakersfield Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Breast cancer survivors gathered in Bakersfield for the 12th annual VIPink event today to share stories and learn about early detection during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Adventist Health showcased new technology—such as a linear accelerator at the AIS Cancer Center—to help patients receive safer treatment.  Bakersfield Now

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Banducci Family Pumpkin Patch opens this October and its 30-year legacy began when the family sold 100 pumpkins from their home—now it offers a corn maze with free entry for kids under five and will add a petting zoo and pony rides soon. The patch is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Halloween from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  23ABC News

  • California State University, Bakersfield President Vernon B.
