COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Woolworth’s Diner, a 75-year-old landmark on 19th Street, will reopen next month and host a block party + ribbon-cutting on October 25 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. as part of a downtown renovation project led by Moneywise.  Bakersfield Now
  • Nearly 200 protesters marched Saturday from the Bakersfield Museum of Art to the Mesa Verde ICE Detention Center to protest inhumane detention conditions and strains on local water and infrastructure. The groups said they will hold another protest Sunday at the CoreCivic facility in California City to demand better treatment and accountability.  23ABC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Kern County Fair, visitors can view exotic reticulated pythons in a glass display that includes a snake that is 23 ft long and bright lorikeets at the Amazon Wonders booth—caretaker Mike said the snakes will not harm anyone as photos cost $10.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kern County declared a state of emergency in Randsburg after last week's storm caused heavy mud flows that damaged homes, eight businesses, and roads — the town also received a boil notice as its water system suffered major damage. County leaders said they will request disaster assistance funding and expect a decision within 60 days.  Bakersfield Now
  • Caltrans and Granite Construction announced the full closure of Highway 166 for bridge rehabilitation starting tomorrow — the work will last 75 days and signed detours will guide traffic via Highway 33, Taft Highway and Interstate 5.  Bakersfield Now
  • The U.S. Transportation Department announced that foreign truck drivers must now have an employment-based visa and pass a federal immigration check. The rule comes after an audit and recent crashes that led officials to warn of lost federal funds—local transportation leaders say the new requirements remain confusing.  Bakersfield Now
