  • Bakersfield Police Department maintained safety at Kern County Fair today using a community policing approach where officers engaged fairgoers and families—resulting in 12 arrests, 26 missing children reunited with loved ones and 29 ejections, with no major incidents reported.  23ABC News

  • Kern County Firefighters Local 1301 started a GoFundMe campaign for Battalion Chief James Agee, who was injured in a rollover crash on August 8 at 6:20 p.m. while fighting the Canyon Fire and spent over a month at Henry Mayo hospital before moving to Craig hospital on September 12 to continue his recovery.  Bakersfield Now

  • Rising beef prices are squeezing shoppers and meat sellers as ground beef climbs 11.5% and steak 12% with the U.S. cattle herd at its lowest since 1951. Fresco Meat Market owner Pedro Aguilar said his store now sells fried fish — a move to help ease the cost burden.  23ABC News

  • Kern High School District is using hydroponics to grow fresh produce for school meals — the new program will give students hands-on learning and healthier food options.  The Bakersfield Californian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City staff are considering a proposal to match a $100K donation from SOS Dog Rescue to fund low-cost spay and neuter clinics on the SNIP Bus — the additional funds will help run nearly two mobile clinics a month and reduce the stray animal population. Bobby Miller, SOS Dog Rescue founder, said the move could ease costs for pet owners in Bakersfield.  23ABC News
  • A task force is studying options for increasing Bakersfield jail beds+ officials say hurdles may delay implementation.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • Governor Gavin Newsom is weighing Senate Bill 682—this bill would ban nonstick cookware containing PFAS chemicals—and he has until October 12 to decide. Supporters say PFAS pose health and environmental risks while industry experts warn that the ban could add economic burdens.  23ABC News
  • The water district will buy produced water from a third local oil producer to join a Kern County program that uses clean oil-field water for irrigation. The plan will add a new source for supplying water to farms + support ongoing water management efforts.  The Bakersfield Californian

  • Adventist Health AIS Cancer Center will host its annual VI Pink event to bring women together for food fun and breast cancer early detection education — the free event will take place on October 2 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. outside the Cancer Center where survivors celebrate and experts share screening tips.  23ABC News
  • Houchin Community Blood Bank and the Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center are launching Breast Cancer Awareness Month events starting Sept. 28th through October, which include the Pink Chair Club donation drive and a special T-shirt giveaway from Sept. 28th to Oct. 4th.
