- ➤ A girls running club in Bakersfield, founded by Luz Almanza after her first half marathon in January 2025, brings together women from diverse backgrounds to exercise together and raise awareness on community issues—members will join local races and participate in the Long Beach Half Marathon next month. 23ABC News
- ➤ Bakersfield Community Healthcare will host its 5th Annual Socktober Drive from October 1 to October 31 to help local veterans and their families get winter items—donations will go to the Wounded Heroes Fund. Community veteran liaison Justina Howell started the drive five years ago by donating 100 pairs of socks and now collects essentials like gloves and beanies. 23ABC News
- ➤ Becky, a chihuahua at Bakersfield Animal Care Center, has been at the shelter since September 14 and quickly became a staff favorite—she now needs a loving home through adoption or fostering. Director Matthew Buck said Becky is happier when she spends time outside the kennel. 23ABC News

- ➤ Tricolor Holdings, doing business as Ganas Holdings, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Sept. 10 and left its Bakersfield auto dealership abandoned—customers are told to keep making payments to avoid repossession. - ➤ Yesterday, the vibrant Latination art exhibit returned downtown after nearly five years and displayed over 100 works from local & state artists. BC faculty Diego Monterrubio showed three paintings from his La Fusión Tres Culturas c/s series & the two-day event celebrated Latino culture with live music and demos. Bakersfield College

- ➤ On Wednesday, the Bakersfield City Council approved three items, including new sewer connection fees and a housing element, during a brief meeting that featured little debate. The Bakersfield Californian
- ➤ University Avenue is set to begin a three-month street improvement project covering 2 miles that will change local parking rules. Northeast Bakersfield resident April Davison said she was informed last week that parking in front of her house is no longer allowed. The Bakersfield Californian
- ➤ The House passed a continuing resolution that extends government funding and local lawmakers Fong and Valadao supported it to avoid a shutdown when funding expires on October 1 - however, the Senate still needs 60 votes which may lead to furloughs and delays in services if not approved. 23ABC News
- ➤ The Kern County Board of Supervisors formally opposed Proposition 50 today, saying the redistricting measure lacks balance and will cost taxpayers over $200 million during a tight financial period (District One Supervisor Philip Peters warned that unbalanced maps affect every voter).
