  • Guarantee Shoe Center honored Rosco Rolnick for 3 decades of community service this spring and ran its 33rd shoe drive that passed 120,000 pairs for Kern County’s most vulnerable residents.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • Sandra Apodaca moved into a new home with her four grandchildren after her daughter, Taylor Estrada, died from domestic violence in May. The Open Door Network (with help from the Patel Foundation) provided funds for four months of rent to help with a home purchase and will continue assisting with improvements as she begins to heal.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Joshua Thomas drove through a construction zone and injured a Caltrans worker when the worker tried to stop his truck — Thomas will face court today as Caltrans warns drivers to slow down and keep road workers safe.  23ABC News

  • Tickets are on sale for the Bakersfield Fox Theater's 50th anniversary screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on October 25, which will feature a live shadow-cast by The Velvet Darkness+ prop bags must be purchased by October 17 with no outside props allowed.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Arts Council of Kern launched the Latination Art Exhibition to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at its gallery in Bakersfield — the exhibit offers free admission and shows work by Latino artists until Oct. 3.  Bakersfield Now

  • Tim Tarver was sworn in as Arvin city council member Tuesday—filling a seat vacant for over a year after councilman Juan Murillo stepped down and restoring the council’s ability to vote by majority. HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr Ravi Patel from the Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center said treatment options for ovarian and prostate cancer have improved, urging regular doctor visits and PSA tests for men 45 and over during the awareness month—local programs now offer guidance and support. He added that early signs like bloating may help in detecting ovarian cancer sooner.  23ABC News
