  • Bakersfield grandmother Sandra Apodaca received a new home from the Open Door Network after taking custody of four children following a May domestic violence incident that left her daughter Taylor Estrada killed by her estranged husband—Rafael.  23ABC News
  • Nearly 5,000 PG&E customers lost power along South Union and Union Avenues on September 22 at 7:34 a.m.—PG&E crews are checking the electrical system and plan to restore power by 1:15 p.m. Kern County Fair officials expect the power to return before the fair opens Monday at 4 p.m.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Dress for Success program returned to Bakersfield—expanding its services to include men as well as women by providing professional clothing, career coaching, and styling for job seekers facing high costs.   • Joe Ducey with the Better Business Bureau is urging local residents to test their ability to spot fake emails that try to steal personal and financial information — the challenge shows how scammers use urgent payment requests and familiar logos to trick consumers.  23ABC News

  • California State Parks is now accepting fall tour reservations for Tomo Kahni State Historic Park where visitors can see the ruins of a 2000 year old Native American village near the 149 year old village of Tehachapi.  The Bakersfield Californian

  • Kris Tiner, a Bakersfield College professor and Director of Jazz Studies, was the keynote speaker at the KCMEA Fall Conference held on Monday, September 22 at Stockdale High School—he shared inspiring stories and encouraged local music educators in Kern County.  Bakersfield College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kern County’s revised groundwater plan cleared state review last week—local agencies avoided probation and will now implement the plan to prevent costly fees. Water managers said the decision helps keep funds in the Kern Subbasin for agricultural, municipal, and industrial needs.  23ABC News
  • Kern County officials celebrated Monday after signing an oil bill that allows increased production—advocates say it will bring good-paying jobs to the area.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • ABC ended the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live and the show will return today in some markets, though it may not air everywhere. Local attorneys stressed that the First Amendment stops government actions— not decisions made by private networks—raising questions about free speech.  23ABC News
