  • Dr. Sudhir Patel is hosting a charity dinner and auction on Oct 2 to fund Christmas celebrations for first-graders in low-income schools, and Santa met with local official Mike Hart at the Kern County Fair to discuss the upcoming event. The fundraiser continues a nearly 20-year tradition by the Jingle Bell Club.  23ABC News
  • A Delano McDonald's is hosting its first McTeacher's Night fundraiser to benefit Nueva Vista Language Academy's student activities fund with proceeds from sales between 4 and 7 p.m.—the event also coincides with National Cheeseburger Day.   • At the Kern County Fair, the Dairy Goat Show ended on Thursday amid rain but strong support, and the grand champions — brothers Nathan and Matthew Pacheco — impressed judges with their dairy goats.   • During this summer’s extreme weather, SoCal Edison scheduled Public Safety Power Shutoffs that forced Kern River Valley’s Cal Water team to run on generators and automated transfer switches to keep water running in the community.   • Yesterday, Bakersfield College held Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off celebrations at the Panorama Campus, Arvin Educational Center, BC Southwest and Delano.   • On September 18th, Bakersfield College's Umoja program held a panel where six students told simple stories of their summer study abroad trip to Egypt—visiting the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tehachapi welcomed a rare September rain today that eased the triple-digit heat and cooled the dry mountain town. City officials said storm drains have been cleaned — ensuring readiness for any heavy rainfall.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, University Avenue between Columbus Street and River Boulevard is intermittently closed from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. for pavement rehabilitation work including ADA ramp upgrades that continues until December 22—drivers should plan for delays. On Saturday, Ming Avenue intersections with Old River Road and Grand Lakes Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for pavement work that finishes the same day—flaggers and alternate routes will guide traffic.  Bakersfield Now
  • Bakersfield officials announced that water maintenance at Truxtun Lakes will extend the Kern River Parkway trail closure until September 26 — PG&E repair work starting on September 22 will lead to a six-month closure on the trail segment between 24th Street and Golden State Highway.   • Bakersfield real estate professionals welcomed the Federal Reserve's interest rate cut—saying it boosted housing affordability and widened refinancing options. They expect the change to prompt more buyers to access the local home market.  The Bakersfield Californian
