ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 63-year-old unrestrained passenger died after being ejected from a 2000 Honda Accord on Highway 99—when the 64-year-old driver, believed to have fallen asleep, lost control near David Road—and struck a berm.  Bakersfield Now
  • A 16-year-old boy from Shafter, identified as Jonathan Enrique Medrano by the Kern County Coroner’s Office, was fatally struck by an Amtrak train on August 30th at around 1:44 p.m.—local residents have started a petition urging safer railroad crossings.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Anabell Correa — a 21-year-old accused of causing a deadly DUI crash on March 25 on Coffee Road and Stockdale Highway that killed Max and Desiree Mooney — will have a court hearing on September 23 as police reported signs of intoxication from Twisted Tea before the crash.  KUZZ
  • A Bakersfield man, Roman Rodriguez, 26, was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for distributing child sexual abuse images—prosecutors say he obtained over 600 illicit images online including depictions of prepubescent children and a toddler.  KUZZ
  • The Bakersfield Police Department is asking the public for help finding Jahir Valle, a 17-year-old runaway with brown hair and eyes who was last seen on the 9500 block of Godiva Avenue on September 1 at about 1:30 p.m.—call 6613277111 if you have any information.  Bakersfield Now
  • Raymond Vasquez Balderas, a 60-year-old inmate at the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility, was found in his cell with a medical emergency at 2:52 p.m. on August 26 and taken to Kern Medical, where he later died—an autopsy is planned to determine his cause of death.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Bakersfield Police Department arrested 39-year-old Michael Williams on murder charges after a fatal stabbing occurred Tuesday afternoon in east Bakersfield near Houser Street and South Williams Street—he was taken into custody inside a residence.  Bakersfield Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wasco Rose Festival starts Thursday, Sept. 4 and runs through Sunday with pagentry and the return of the popular Rose Tour—cancelled a decade ago but revived due to popular demand. Juan Gallardo, the festival foundation president, said the event will draw visitors to Wasco.  23ABC News
  • Stand-up comedian Basile will headline a fundraiser for the Greek Food Festival on Saturday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in the Hellenic Center—serving appetizers and Greek pastries at 6 p.m. as a preview for the festival set for October 10-12.  23ABC News
