ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Kern County Coroner’s Office confirmed that 42-year-old Adam Clayton Guthrie was struck by a vehicle on North Chester Avenue and Roberts Lane in Oildale on August 17 at 8:47 p.m. and taken to Kern Medical where he died on August 20 — his death was verified by an autopsy.  Bakersfield Now
  • Nick Danbrowney of the Bakersfield Train Robbers died in a car crash on August 21 at 5:25 a.m.—details about the accident were not provided, though he was known as the all-time strikeout leader at Ramapo College and had recently begun his baseball career in Bakersfield.  KUZZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Pactiv Evergreen plant in Oildale that makes plastic packaging for supermarkets and restaurants will close later this year, eliminating 127 jobs near Meadows Field Airport. The closure follows an acquisition of its parent company.  The Bakersfield Californian

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kernville man (Joshua Michael Thomas) was arrested on August 20th for allegedly hitting a Caltrans worker outside his truck on Highway 178 near Canebrake Road when his 2021 Ford Ranger bypassed a signage truck during a road closure and later fled the scene, with the worker taken to Ridgecrest Hospital for severe leg injuries and now in stable condition.  Bakersfield Now
  • Two suspected gang members pleaded not guilty on August 21 for the April 2022 shooting death of Jarvis Naff, Jr.—he was shot while leaving a party and they face charges including first degree murder and gang conspiracy with their next court date set for August 28.  KUZZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kern River gold rush in Kern County began in 1851 when gold was found near Bakersfield—this led to the quick rise of mining towns like Whiskey Flat, Petersburg, Glennville, Keyesville, and Havilah. Havilah served as the county seat from 1866 until government moved to Bakersfield, and miners later shifted from panning gold to hard rock mining in nearby river and desert areas.  KVPR
  • Architect S. Charles Lee built nearly 400 movie palaces in California and designed Bakersfield’s Fox Theatre in 1930 in a Spanish Colonial Revival style while also building Fresno’s Tower Theatre in 1939 in a Streamline Moderne style with etched glass and murals (reflecting his belief that the show starts on the sidewalk).  KVPR

  • Bakersfield pet owners and rescue groups worry that cuts in the city budget may slow low-cost spay and neuter services that keep stray animals in check. The city plans to form a committee — the Critters Coalition — to find more funding while advocates warn that longer wait times and higher costs could worsen the stray problem.  23ABC News
  • A judge in Los Angeles allowed a lawsuit by oil companies challenging SB1137, the law that stops new drilling near homes, schools & hospitals in Kern County. The case will return to court on September 22 to decide if the law is fair.  23ABC News
