COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Friends of Kern County Library will host a book sale this weekend beginning Friday, August 8 at 11 a.m.—library members will get early access as attendees find workbooks, CDs, puzzles and toys. Proceeds will support free children's programs at the library.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • An 8-year-old girl was found dead in a locked hotel bathroom at the La Quinta Hotel on Riverside Drive and two suspects, Ray Mata Jr. (31) and Graciela Bustamonte (27), were arrested on charges of murder, torture and child abuse.  Bakersfield Now
  • The sheriff’s office took a report on July 26—about missing funds from the Rio Bravo Greeley parent-teacher club—after parents were warned, and the school district said it supports the investigation and will review internal protocols.  23ABC News
  • Bakersfield Police Department is asking the public to help identify three suspects involved in a vehicle burglary near Ming Avenue and Wible Road on July 13th at about 4:00 p.m.—the suspects include a woman in her 30s with tattoos, a man with a mustache wearing a black hat, and another man with short black hair—and to call detective Eric Hardin with any information.  Bakersfield Now
  • Bakersfield police and CHP are seeking help to locate 2-year-old Kiara Hernandez and her mother, Karen Hernandez, who reportedly abducted the child on August 4 at 2:05 p.m. in the 600 block of 24th Street + if you see them, call 9-1-1 + or dial 661-327-7111 immediately.  Bakersfield Now
  • Bakersfield Police are asking for help to find 37-year-old Adrean Ayala — a man at risk due to mental health concerns — who was last seen on August 4 at 2:15 p.m. in the 5300 block of California Avenue.  Bakersfield Now
  • Officers arrested convicted felon Edwardo Sanchez-Martinez in Stallion Springs on August 1st after stopping a white Honda on Banducci Road following a tip about a felony vehicle — a search uncovered a stolen .45 handgun, 47 rounds of ammunition, and marijuana, and he was booked into Kern County Jail on charges of firearm possession, stolen property, and drug possession.  Bakersfield Now

  • With the new school year coming soon, Dr. Puja Bithalani from Kaiser Permanente said parents should adjust their children's sleep routines five to seven days before school starts—improved sleep is expected to boost student performance.  Bakersfield Now
  • Bakersfield College's Commercial Music Program has been offering hands-on courses in music used in ads, film & TV since 2017. Professor Joshua Ottum said the program builds both technical and business skills to help students prepare for careers in commercial music.  Bakersfield College
