COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, families with children in kindergarten to 3rd grade received free backpacks filled with school supplies at the Bakersfield Central Seventh-day Adventist Church—4201 Wilson Rd—for the new school term. Church volunteers said the event helps ease the burden of rising costs for local families.  Bakersfield Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire burned 77 acres of vegetation near Lost Hills on Saturday evening — south of Highway 46 and west of Highway 33.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • A motorcyclist died in a collision with a truck at 10:42 a.m. on the 1000 block of Kern Street in Taft — firefighters arrived and pronounced him dead.  Bakersfield Now
  • On July 26, Kern County fire crews responded to the Brown Fire near Lost Hills that burned 77 acres when flames started south of Hwy 46 and Hwy 33 at 6:30 p.m.—the teams from Lost Hills, McKittrick, Buttonwillow and Wasco battled the blaze for about 3 hours and no one was injured.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Five men were convicted in gang-related shootings, including the fatal shooting of Mario Bravo at Mesa Marin Sports Complex—sentencing is set for August 20 and will see them face life terms in prison.  KGET
  • A suspect was arrested for DUI after a fatal crash on Fairfax Road in East Bakersfield early Sunday morning that killed the driver of a silver sedan + injured the driver of a black pick-up truck.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said Daren Williford — a 46-year-old man — was arrested on July 24 after an alleged killing on July 12 in the 800 block of Beardsley Avenue, where the victim was pronounced dead; he is being held without bail and is due in court today.  KUZZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, a tentative agreement was reached between Albertsons Companies and workers at Albertsons, Safeway, and Vons stores in Northern and Central California that avoids a strike—providing wage increases, a secure retirement plan, health care, and improved work conditions for 25,000 workers after five months of intense negotiations, as announced by UFCW groups.  KUZZ
