- ➤ The Kern County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help to locate a missing teen last seen in south Bakersfield. The Bakersfield Californian
- ➤ A 30-year-old man admitted to killing his 74-year-old roommate at a Bakersfield group home on June 2 and is scheduled to undergo a competence exam next month—if found incompetent, he will be sent to a state hospital for restoration. KGET
- ➤ Darius Key, 42, was sentenced on Thursday to 40 years to life for murder and attempted murder after driving the unidentified shooter to Clifton Street on Feb. 11, 2023 in a gang-related shooting that killed Johnasen Lee Crummie, 27, and left another man paralyzed—prosecutors said he targeted rival gang members. - ➤ The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is asking Bakersfield residents to help find 15-year-old William Rosales, who was last seen near the 2100 block of South I Street around 6 p.m. on Wednesday—he is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 100 pounds and has black hair and black eyes while wearing a light brown T-shirt, faded blue jean shorts and black Crocs, and anyone with information should call 661-861-3110 or 661-322-4040. - ➤ BC’s Performing Arts department opened its summer musical The Scarlet Pimpernel on July 24 at the Edward Simonsen Indoor Theater, earning rave reviews for Nathan Armendariz as the mysterious hero and Elena Baker-Hart as Marguerite St. Just; the production will run again today at 7:30 p.m. plus shows are scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Bakersfield College
- ➤ 11-year-old Breslin Bumgarner will sing the National Anthem again for Keith Urban’s concert at the Mid-State Fair today after her breakout at the Crystal Palace last year, and she will later audition for a Christmas show at Dollywood in Tennessee where she will perform four songs (including Dolly Parton’s 'Puppy Love'). Breslin aims to build a career in music and theater (inspired by Idina Menzel), and her mother said her talent has grown steadily this past year. KGET

- ➤ Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a bill to simplify oil well permits with plug-to-drill rules until 2036—meaning two wells must be plugged before drilling a new one—in Kern County.
