  • North of the River Recreation and Park District is set to celebrate its 70th anniversary festival on Saturday, October 11 at Polo Community Park with Bakersfield’s first public drone light show— the festival starts at 3 p.m. and the drone finale will be at 7:30 p.m., with carnival games, a community blood drive, live music and a championship cornhole tournament also on offer.  Bakersfield Now
  • Marshall Sanchez — a 17-year-old Eagle Scout — raised over $10,000 to improve the Kern County Human Services Child Visitation Center by adding a half court basketball court, benches, and a refurbished playhouse to create a welcoming space for kids and parents. He started the project last Easter after noticing the center needed more games and comfort, and his work is expected to help strengthen family reunification in the community.  KGET
  • City officials celebrated placing the 500th and 501st guests from the Brundage Lane Navigation Center into permanent homes over the weekend—bringing the total to 501 since the shelter opened in 2020. Homelessness in Kern County slightly declined by 2.3% from last year.  KGET

  • Tino Ibach, a 54-year-old Stevie Wonder impersonator, faces charges after he reportedly grabbed the hand of a 3-year-old girl at Snappy’s gas station on Stockdale Highway on June 30—he is charged with lewd acts with a child, attempted kidnapping, and battery and is set to appear in court on August 6.  KUZZ
  • A 23-year-old Tehachapi man is in custody after he allegedly stabbed his 83-year-old grandfather and burned his remains in a storage unit near Banducci Road — a hearing is set for August 25 at 9 a.m.  23ABC News
  • On May 28, an intoxicated Rafael Estrada argued with his estranged wife over a divorce at an eighth-grade graduation party in east Bakersfield—he followed her into a back room and stabbed her in the neck, triggering a chase that ended in a church parking lot and led to his arrest and charges of first-degree murder.  KGET
