The 17th annual Ready, Set, Back 2 School Drive offers free backpacks and supplies at library events starting July 17; children in kindergarten through 12th grade may receive one bag with an adult, and a Health and Wellness Fair is scheduled August 6 at Kern County Museum in Bakersfield.

Books in Motion, a literacy program by Kern Dance Alliance, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year with live reading, singing and dancing events at local libraries.

The program, touring from Delano to Buttonwillow, has seen a significant rise in participation and book giveaways since 2022.

CSUB geologist Dr. Matt Herman spoke on TV this morning about the need to be ready for an earthquake, saying that while the next quake is hard to predict, heat may influence its occurrence.

His remarks encourage local earthquake preparedness.
