Daniel Lee Barton, 43, pleaded no contest in May to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run causing death after he intentionally ran over a motorcyclist in Bakersfield and was sentenced Tuesday to 16 years in prison—other charges were dropped under his plea deal.

On July 11, Bakersfield police held a DUI and driver's license checkpoint at Anita Lane and Ming Avenue near Valley Plaza Mall, screening 1,041 vehicles—citing one driver for being unlicensed, two for a suspended license, detaining one for evaluation, impounding four vehicles, and later making 60 stops that led to 24 more citations, 12 additional impoundments, and arrests for DUI, felony warrants, and illegal marijuana sales.
