ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man died when his 2002 Ford Escape veered off Highway 99 and overturned north of Bakersfield at about 7:38 p.m. Friday—he was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.  KGET

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kingsburg man, Roman Espino, 37, was arrested on Friday after he allegedly robbed a Delano bank of $72,000 when police used license plate readers to trace his white SUV to Dinuba and executed search warrants at his vehicle and homes that yielded more cash and a pellet gun—he now remains in custody on $130,000 bail and is set for court Tuesday.  KGET
  • Bakersfield police are seeking help to locate 16-year-old Gabriella Vasquez who was last seen Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on Molokai Drive near Allen Road in Northwest Bakersfield wearing a gray sweater, leggings and black tennis shoes, and who is 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 90 pounds and has a dermal piercing, a nose stud and a dollar sign tattoo on her middle finger (call 327-7111 with any information).  23ABC News
  • Bakersfield Police Department is asking the public for help finding Roberto Gutierrez, 30, who went missing Friday around 11 a.m. on the 900 block of Grace Street and is at risk due to mental health issues—he is 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighs 290 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes, wears glasses, and was last seen in a black shirt, cargo shorts and black sandals.  KGET
  • Bakersfield Police arrested Fernando Jara—husband of District 5 Supervisor Leticia Perez—on Saturday morning after he repeatedly made criminal threats during a welfare check at a home on the 1800 block of Alta Vista Drive around 11:32 a.m., and SWAT later took him into custody with minimal force and booked him at Lerdo Jail.  Bakersfield Now
  • Victor Cruz, a 40-year-old Bakersfield tax preparer, pleaded guilty on Monday, July 14 to aiding a fraud scheme that sought $25 million in refunds by filing over 500 false tax returns for Miguel Martinez & earning fees before Martinez received a six-year sentence; Cruz is scheduled for sentencing on November 17 and faces up to 10 years in prison plus a $250,000 fine.  Bakersfield Now

  • Today, Kern County supervisors will discuss proposals to extend psychiatric holds from 14 days to 30 days and to reroute 911 mental health calls—measures aimed at giving patients more time for stabilization—while also considering a new ordinance that would make possession of catalytic converters without proper records a misdemeanor with fines up to $1,000 or up to one year in jail.  KGET

  • A Bakersfield nonprofit is offering free teen education sessions on fentanyl dangers—its program features local survivor Mya Watson sharing her experience after early exposure. The sessions run throughout the summer as Kern County reports 50 fentanyl-related deaths so far this year.  23ABC News
