  • Bakersfield Angels is preparing for the back-to-school season by gathering supplies like clothes, shoes, and backpacks for over 2,000 foster care children in Kern County who move on average seven times while in care. Co-executive director Allison McLain said the non-profit builds relationships and mentorship programs to help these kids feel supported—ensuring they start school ready to learn.  Bakersfield Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A pilot suffered life-threatening injuries after his Cessna 170A crashed on July 3 north of Hart Park as rescue crews reached the isolated site and airlifted him to a hospital — the FAA will investigate the incident.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities dismantled a meth lab in Taft this week and arrested five suspects, seizing 242 pounds of meth and over 2,500 pounds of liquid meth — the suspects are due in court next week.  KGET
  • A man died after being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle on South Union Avenue on July 4th at 9:39 a.m.—police found him with severe injuries at the 8100 block and closed the northbound lanes for further investigation.  Bakersfield Now
  • Bakersfield police said a suspect attempted to assault officers with a large hunting knife at Walmart on Gosford Road and was shot Thursday night—authorities report the incident unfolded quickly.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • Bakersfield Police are asking for help finding 81-year-old Miguel Pantoja — an at-risk Hispanic man with medical conditions last seen on July 3 at about 7:20 a.m. in the 1300 block of Dodge Avenue wearing a tan sun hat, brown button-up shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes — and anyone with information is urged to contact the department immediately.  Bakersfield Now
  • Jeremy Daniel Cruzen is charged with first-degree murder after fingerprints on a Red Bull can linked him to the killing of Christopher Wagstaff near the Kern County Vietnam War Memorial in August 2014—Cruzen claimed self-defense but surveillance video and the evidence did not match his story, and he is held without bail pending a court hearing in late August.  KGET

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Evacuation warnings from the Madre Fire have extended to Fellows as the wildfire continues to move into Kern County. The blaze burned over 52,000 acres and remained only 10% contained — residents are urged to monitor local updates for further instructions.  23ABC News
  • California’s largest wildfire of 2025, the Madre Fire, burned over 70,000 acres with 10% containment as it moved through San Luis Obispo County near Kern and forced evacuations along Highway 166. Firefighters battled rising winds and 95-degree F heat while fire command is set to change later today + smoke has lowered air quality in Kern.  Bakersfield Now
