Local shelters in Bakersfield are preparing for a 100% surge in stray animals after July 4 fireworks may frighten pets — LA rescue group Pups Without Borders will assist, and shelters will offer free microchips this Saturday to help owners identify lost animals.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the death of inmate Jose Rodriguez—found unresponsive in his cell on June 27th—after cellmate Steven Miranda was removed as officials probe the homicide.

The Bakersfield Police Department is seeking help locating at-risk missing adult Maximo Oseguerafarias, 34, who was last seen on June 27 at 8:30 p.m., in the 700 block of 8th St in central Bakersfield, described as 5'9 tall, 190 pounds with black hair and brown eyes while wearing a grey/black T-shirt and shorts, and authorities urge anyone with information to call BPD (661) 327-7111.

Razz Reynolds, known as the Roaming Hillbilly, will perform at the 25th Annual Benz Bad Bullz Rodeo (held at Tehachapi Event Center) on July 4th.

The event will start at 4 p.m. and feature bull riding (beginning at 6 p.m.) before ending with a fireworks show by the city.
