- ➤ Bakersfield city officials and Today Cleaners will host a bathing suit donation drive on June 12 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at four pool sites. Donating a new or gently used bathing suit will let one person enter for free — the pools are Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pool, Jefferson Park Pool, McMurtrey Aquatic Center, and Silver Creek Pool. - ➤ A man who had exited his vehicle after hitting a tree died late Saturday night when he was struck by a blue Honda sedan on Old River Road and White Oak Drive in southwest Bakersfield — police said the driver remained at the scene and impairment was not a factor. Bakersfield Now

- ➤ Bakersfield police are asking the community to help locate Andrew Varela, a missing 30-year-old man last seen May 23 at around 9 p.m. in the 200 block of 17th Street who is described as Hispanic, 6 feet tall and 175 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes, a brown goatee and a tattoo of birds on his right forearm. - ➤ The Bakersfield Police Department asked the community to help locate 13-year-old Annmarie Sanchez who was last seen June 6 in the 100 block of Cedar Street; she is 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds, making her at-risk since she has no history of running away—if you have information, call 661-327-7111. - ➤ On Friday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Kern Valley State Prison, inmate Julian Mendez was stabbed to death when Mario Renteria hit him and over 30 inmates joined the attack—staff used blast grenades to quell the violence and later found an improvised weapon as investigators began the case. - ➤ A 39-year-old Bakersfield man, Jatinder Singh, was shot and killed on New Year's Day at about 5:16 p.m. on Casa Loma Drive (southeast Bakersfield), and police said an arrest warrant was issued for Gurjinder Singh while the suspect remains at large. Bakersfield Now
- ➤ A 37-year-old man pleaded no contest to felony unlawful sexual intercourse and misdemeanor contempt of court charges for allegedly impregnating his daughter’s former best friend, a 16-year-old girl; his sentencing hearing is set for July 9 — and he may face up to three years in prison with a 10-year sex offender registration. - ➤ A man died after he was struck by a blue Honda sedan Sunday night in west Bakersfield after his silver Infiniti coupe crashed into a tree on Old River Road—police said the Honda driver remained at the scene and was not impaired. KGET

- ➤ At its meeting on Monday, the Kern High School District Board considered updating its policy to ban textbooks and class materials that result in discrimination to meet the new Senate Bill 153. The proposed rule will allow only staff, residents, and parents to file complaints (with possible penalties if corrections are not made) and further details on enforcement are still under review (expect additional updates soon).
