The grand Spanish Colonial Revival El Tejon Hotel opened in downtown in 1926 with 175 rooms and popular venues, but after a decline it was demolished in 1970 and is now remembered on vintage postcards (a local landmark lost to time).
In 1991, Kern County hosted 'The Umbrellas' by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, a temporary art exhibit with 3,100 yellow umbrellas spanning 18 miles along the Grapevine on I-5 that ended early after wind toppled an umbrella (causing a fatality) and left a lasting mark on local art.
