- ➤ A brush fire started Wednesday night near I-5 at Fort Tejon Road and forced an evacuation warning for areas north of Temescal Drive, Digier Road, south of I-5, east of Grapevine Road, and west of I-5—fire crews dropped water by helicopter as the blaze burned 133 acres and reached 5% containment by early morning. - ➤ Jason Garibay, 30, admitted he killed his 74-year-old roommate, Domingo Trevino, by stomping on his head and neck at an apartment on South Williams Street on Monday—he said they did not get along and he acted after hearing a homophobic slur, and he now faces murder and elder assault charges with a preliminary hearing set later this month. - ➤ On March 16, a Kern County sheriff’s lieutenant with a BAC nearly four times the legal limit crashed a minivan at Allen Road and Stockdale Highway at 11:46 a.m., hitting three vehicles and later fleeing a hit-and-run crash before being arrested after a short standoff — he now faces nine felony counts. - ➤ A Bakersfield woman—35-year-old Alicia Iona Thornton with prior strikes—was convicted on two felony counts for arson after she poured rubbing alcohol on Crab in a Bag restaurant’s front door on Union Avenue on Feb. 27, 2024, and her sentencing is scheduled for July 10. KGET
- ➤ A man accused of beating a developmentally disabled man at a convenience store on Ming Avenue in Bakersfield was sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday—he pleaded no contest to assault and was taken into custody immediately. KGET
