EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mira Monte High School valedictorian Joshua Chavez will attend Stanford University this fall to study economics and explore a future in law. Chavez—who led school clubs and community projects—selected Stanford after careful campus visits.  Bakersfield Now
  • Arvin High School students study ocean science through the pilot Arvin Inland Ocean Conservation Initiative, partnering with marine scientists (including National Geographic Explorers) as they complete field trips that build skills and spark interest in animal biology, with plans for an on-campus club to extend the program.  23ABC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • California Resources Corporation's Carbon Terravault I is now operational near TUPMAN, capturing 100,000 tons of CO2 annually from local industries while planning to expand its capacity in Kern County (up to 1.5 million tons per year).  23ABC News
  • Environmental groups opposed Kern County’s approval of hundreds of new oil well drilling permits on Wednesday, targeting those permits that involve the use of contested extraction methods (according to a consumer advocacy group).  The Bakersfield Californian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bakersfield Fire Department’s HazMat team contained an oil spill near Stockdale Highway and Allen Road Tuesday morning (stopping it from entering storm drains) and worked with the Streets Department to safely reopen the roadway.  Bakersfield Now

  • Elsa, an 8-year-old adoptable dog from OceanRay Rescue (a Chihuahua), will be available at a pet adoption event at the Tractor Supply store on Calloway Drive this Sunday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Bakersfield.  23ABC News

  • Beau Redstone comes home as the new general manager for the Roadrunners men's basketball team — he will work to rebuild community ties under coach Todd Lee. He aims to engage fans, raise funds, and prepare the team for a season starting this fall.  23ABC News
