COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North of the River Parks and Recreation will host a summer camp for children ages 5 to 11 from June 2 to August 1 at $170 per week—offering themed weeks with games and crafts—and will cast a junior theater program for kids ages 5 to 17, with casting starting May 31 and rehearsals from June 9 to July 24. Additional sessions are set at $250 for mornings and $235 for afternoons.  Bakersfield Now
  • On Memorial Day, neighbors gathered at Historic Union Cemetery along Potomac Avenue to honor fallen veterans—attendees parked nearby and filed in to pay their tribute. The event reflected a shared commitment in the community to remember those who served.  The Bakersfield Californian

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • China Lake Mountain Rescue Group rescued hikers stranded on a steep hill near Owens Peak after receiving a report Friday afternoon; officials said they used cell phone communication & pulled the hikers to safety around 1:30 a.m.  KGET

  • Bakersfield Police Department is asking for help finding 14-year-old Bella Richardson who was last seen on May 23 at 4 p.m. in the 1200 block of New Stine Road — she is at risk as a first-time runaway and is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 125 pounds with black hair, brown eyes, a red shirt, black jeans and a pink backpack.  KGET
  • Bakersfield police are asking the public to help locate 16-year-old Ja-Mes Wandick, who was last seen on Saturday at about 4 p.m. near the 4800 block of Belle Terrace Avenue and is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds with black braided hair, brown eyes, a gray Nike sweater, blue jean shorts and black Crocs with fur, and anyone with information should call 661-327-7111.  KGET
  • A 20-year-old was arrested for DUI after crashing into a gas station sign near Fastrip on Mt. Vernon Avenue and Niles Street Thursday night—one passenger suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital.  KGET
  • Fidel Habana Vargas, accused of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated — who checked his phone GPS on May 7 — drove his Toyota Camry into a van at the Wallace Road and Cecil Avenue intersection, killing front passenger Oliver Campuzano Villalva and injuring others, and he admitted to drinking an 18-pack of Modelo and using a small dose of methamphetamine while his court date is set for next month.  KGET

  • A recent PODS report placed Bakersfield at 19th among California cities losing residents because of high cost of living, high taxes — and natural disasters, while new state data shows the city’s population grew by 3,000 since last year as affordable housing draws long-term investment.  Bakersfield Now

  • Graduation season starts today in Kern County as 22 Kern High School District schools plan to hold ceremonies from today to May 30. Most events begin at 7 p.m. at each school—such as Bakersfield High—and mark an important milestone for local seniors.  KGET

  • On May 22, Kern County issued its first Fire Weather Watch as nearly triple digit weather and dry conditions raised warnings for wildfires similar to the Eaton and Palisades fires (reminding residents of past events). City and county leaders in Bakersfield are planning a master fire plan to boost equipment and response times in high-risk areas.  KGET
