- ➤ Kern County will open cooling centers from June 1 through Sept. 22 at sites including the East Bakersfield Veterans Building and The Mission of Kern County — centers will run from 1 to 8 p.m. on days when forecast highs reach set thresholds, with notices issued by 11 a.m. the day before. KUZZ
