ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from the Kern County Fire Department extinguished an early morning mobile home fire on Piute Avenue in the Johannesburg area Friday, and two people affected are receiving help from the Red Cross + no injuries were reported while the cause remains undetermined.  KGET

  • Bakersfield Police are asking for help finding 11-year-old Ethan Hernandez who was last seen May 15th in the 2400 block of Planz Road and is described as 5 feet tall, 127 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, wearing a green sweater, black jeans, blue and white Air Jordan shoes, and carrying a black and white backpack.  Bakersfield Now
  • Bakersfield Police are seeking help to locate an at-risk 11-year-old runaway, Danielle Bernal, who was last seen on May 15 near the 2400 block of Planz Road; anyone with information should call (661) 327-7111.  Bakersfield Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vineland School District says local parents have not used its food pantry+ mobile clinic, with the pantry operating for two years and the clinic offered Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Superintendent Cindy Castro warns that if usage remains low+ the district may cut the mobile clinic while parents worry about losing these services.  23ABC News
  • Alexandra Brown, a Master’s biology student at CSUB, received the Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement in December after she began therapy and medication for ADHD — a condition that affected her studies. She is expected to graduate with her Master’s this December and plans to pursue a PhD afterward.  KGET
  • The Panama Buena Vista School District has announced job openings for transitional kindergarten aides — applicants need 48 college semester units and a passed paraprofessional exam, while special education teacher positions remain open for qualified candidates.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Wednesday night’s meeting, the Bakersfield City Council voted down a proposal to raise sewer rates by 300% meant to fund repairs to an aging system — including upgrades to the nearly 70-year-old treatment plant. City staff will now develop alternate funding options — promising better communication with taxpayers for future repairs.  KGET
  • Buttonwillow residents will gain emergency firefighter paramedic services at Station 25 starting July when KCFD staffs one captain and three paramedics 24/7 through next June — the service is funded by a $239,346 agreement with the Buttonwillow Community Foundation and is set for board approval on May 20.  KGET
  • A Kern County Grand Jury report found that the Lamont Storm Water District, created in 1984 to protect the community from floods, has not met its duties—lacking an office, staff, and a public advisory role. Local leaders and residents now await a decision from LAFCo and the Board of Supervisors by July 1.  23ABC News
