  • Highland High School will host the Scotsman Market on Saturday, May 10, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on its farm to raise money for its Future Farmers of America program — the event will offer plants, a petting zoo with $1 animal feed, food vendors and a popular salsa kit.  Bakersfield Now
  • Zach Skow, the founder of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue, announced Tuesday that he submitted his two-week notice to leave the shelter—he plans to help animals and will share his next move later.   • Chef Lino’s Prime, which took over the former Wiki’s Wine Dive & Grill, is holding a soft opening this weekend with Friday and Saturday reservations available—its Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday is set from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chef Lino said the grand opening celebration will be held sometime in the next few weeks—details will be announced later.  KGET

  • An expert warned that online predators now use social media platforms like Instagram or Roblox to lure children, so parents should set clear rules and watch what their kids do online. Teenagers are told to verify new contacts with an adult—experts say this extra check is key for safety.  KGET
  • A 16-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg while allegedly fleeing officers on May 6 at 10:41 p.m. near Niles Street and Mount Vernon Avenue—he and another teen were arrested for unlawful firearm discharge.  KGET
  • Tomice Fryman, the suspected driver in the deadly Westside Parkway hit-and-run near the Mohawk Street off-ramp on May 3, called police at 4:15 p.m. to turn himself in after driving home and admitting he was involved, though he pleaded not guilty to charges including second-degree murder, vehicle manslaughter with gross negligence, and hit-and-run — DMV records show his license was suspended for DUI and he had previous DUI convictions.  Bakersfield Now
