  • Bakersfield launched two new programs to improve safety and cleanliness on the Kern River Trail. Park rangers now have four new e-bikes—purchased with a $24,000 grant—and a bike patrol of ten community volunteers is set to help visitors along the trail.  Bakersfield Now
  • Today, the Kern Community Foundation hosted its third annual Give Big at the Park event at Riverwalk Park to connect residents with over 60 local non-profits as they prepare for Tuesday’s Giving Day.   • On May 1, 2025, Kern County firefighters rescued a motorcyclist from a crash at Dove Springs Off-Highway Vehicle Area when heavy rain made ambulance access hard— the rider was taken to a hospital for further care.  Bakersfield Now
  • Kern County firefighters responded at 10:25 a.m. on May 3rd to a mobile home fire on the 200 block of Salaine Drive in Bodfish—neighbors reported a possible resident inside, and crews quickly rescued two dogs, returning them to their family while the blaze caused significant damage with no injuries reported.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating a suspicious death along eastbound lanes of Westside Parkway between Coffee Rd and Truxtun Ave off-ramp + the lanes are closed for the next few hours while officers work the scene.  Bakersfield Now
  • On May 2, 2025, deputies from the Kern County Sheriff's Office, Gang Suppression Unit and Taft Police Department executed a search warrant in the 500 block of Garfield Avenue in Taft that ended with the arrest of 30-year-old Shawn Dakota Smith, who is accused of false imprisonment, resisting arrest and multiple outstanding warrants and was booked into Lerdo jail.  Bakersfield Now

  • The fourth annual Latina Maternal Health Fair at Cal State Bakersfield brought families and specialists together to share crucial resources for pregnant mothers — local officials pointed to the need to address high risks amid a changing community.
