- ➤ Bakersfield veterans from VFW Post 7216 will raise a new flag and pole at Real Care Assisted Living on Real Road on Saturday, May 2nd, starting at noon with a flag ceremony at 1:30 p.m. to honor an official day of service ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday. 23ABC News
- ➤ Community leaders in Allensworth, a historic town north of Bakersfield built and run by African Americans, approved a community plan in March. They are now reviving the town with new wells, a storage tank and cemetery fixes while the plan won an award for its design. Bakersfield Now

- ➤ Fire crews battled a three-acre vegetation fire on Caliente Bodfish Road near the former Havilah area just before 2 p.m. yesterday (PG&E camera showed active flames) as officials investigated the cause. Bakersfield Now

- ➤ Minter Field Air Museum is featuring early 20th century exhibition racers today and tomorrow at the field. The event highlights the museum’s legacy with WWII warbirds & the pilots who flew them. The Bakersfield Californian
- ➤ California State Parks has proposed converting the historic Weedpatch Camp (inspiring The Grapes of Wrath) into a state park. The site on Sunset Boulevard between Weedpatch Highway and South Vineland Road near Arvin will soon invite community input on its future. 23ABC News

- ➤ Bakersfield College held its second Campus Equity Conversations event on April 30, 2026. The all-student panel and guest speakers discussed building belonging and concluded with networking and fresh pizza. Bakersfield College
- ➤ Students at Discovery Elementary and Centennial High School worked together on illustrated books based on stories written by over 100 sixth graders. The finished books (to be donated soon to local hospitals) aim to bring comfort and joy to children. 23ABC News
- ➤ Bakersfield College did not record a threatening call to its safety department during February lockdowns, raising safety and transparency concerns as officials maintain detailed written logs meet legal requirements under two-party consent.
