- ➤ Bakersfield police arraigned 35-year-old Bobby Lemons on Friday on hit-and-run charges for the Wednesday morning crash on the Chester Avenue bridge near Columbus Street that killed 48-year-old John Ross — investigators used Flock cameras to trace the truck — and he now faces up to four years in prison plus a $10,000 fine — Court Commissioner Sally Ackerknecht said his failure to stop was especially troubling. - ➤ Kern County leads the state in filing cases under Proposition 36 after the voter measure passed last fall and a PPIC study showed it filed more cases per 100,000 people than other counties. - ➤ A survey by the Public Policy Institute of California found Kern County filed 24 Proposition 36 cases per 100,000 residents in the law's first 90 days—68 percent of the cases involved drug offenses. District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer said the law, passed in November 2024 and effective December 18th, 2024, has helped target repeat offenders while gaining 77 percent voter support. Bakersfield Now
