  • Today at Bakersfield National Cemetery, officials honored five unaccompanied veterans by laying them to rest and reading out their names—Robert Carroll, Bruce Tibbets, William Luckie, Roger Steiner, and Neville Solomon. The event underscored Kern County's commitment to showing respect to those who served.  KGET
  • The 22nd annual Great American Cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 26, with volunteer work from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and a community celebration at Yokuts Park from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. led by Mayor Karen Goh plus in-person registration is available at multiple locations through Thursday.  KGET
  • On April 22, five veterans without known family were honored at Bakersfield National Cemetery as local community members gathered to remember their sacrifice. Yolanda Crowe from Veterans Affairs said the ceremony included a rifle salute, the playing of Taps, and the presentation of an American flag to ensure their service was recognized.  Bakersfield Now

  • A man died after he became trapped under a school bus when it was being loaded onto a tow truck near Golden Valley High School in south Bakersfield on Tuesday, April 22nd at 7:45 p.m.—police said no children were present and the investigation is underway.  Bakersfield Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Bakersfield Police Department is asking for help to identify two alleged suspects in an armed robbery on April 8 at about 11:35 a.m. in the 1700 block of 27th Street—one is a 6-foot man with a medium build wearing a blue hoodie and black pants and the other is a 5’9'' slim man in all black with white and gold Nike shoes who fled in a Nissan Altima with red paper plates and rear-end damage.  Bakersfield Now
  • Bakersfield agreed to pay $2,250,000 to settle a negligence lawsuit after officer William Hughes hit motorist Blas Parra's truck on Panorama Drive in 2017, which hurt him badly and led to head trauma and surgery—ending nearly seven years of legal dispute.  KGET

  • Circle Jerks (a legendary hardcore punk band) will perform at the Nile Theater (with special guests Ceremony and Negative Approach) on Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. in Bakersfield.  KGET

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bakersfield Monitor Team has reviewed the police department’s progress on the DOJ agreement since 2021. The latest report shows critical incidents dropped from six in 2023 to two in 2024—officer-involved shootings fell from seven to three while internal review boards still often justified officer actions, and officials said finalized training plans and a full use-of-force review are pending for later this year.  23ABC News
  • Today at Bakersfield National Cemetery, five veterans without any known family—Airman First Class Robert Carroll, Airman First Class Bruce Tibbets, Airman Apprentice William Luckie, Private First Class Roger Steiner, and Private First Class Neville Solomon—were honored and interred with a service that showed Kern County's deep respect for its heroes.  KGET
