- ➤ The La Mirage Motel in Bakersfield caught fire just after 4 a.m. on Easter Sunday, and no injuries were reported after evictions nearly a week ago removed more than a dozen people — including the manager — from the property; crews used three fire engines, two trucks and two battalions to contain the flames — keeping the fire from spreading to the adjacent building. - ➤ Jeremy Pletcher, accused of stealing beer from Rite Aid and shooting at a deputy near Valley Plaza Mall in Bakersfield, was arrested after hiding in a storage shed and made his first court appearance on Thursday—he faces seven charges with a bond set at $560,000 and is scheduled to return to court on April 29. - ➤ 33-year-old Bakersfield man Ramon Maldonado Jr. pleaded guilty to drug trafficking after law enforcement discovered over 55 pounds of drugs including fentanyl, psilocybin, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine along with a gun in a home during an August 10 raid, and he will be sentenced on August 4 - he faces a minimum 10-year prison term and a maximum penalty of life in prison with a $10 million fine. - ➤ Trout’s, a historic bar that burned down three years ago, has given new life to local music as wood from its walls is used to craft 14 unique guitars. Tony Brown and Theresa Spanke reunited the guitars on Saturday by displaying them—along with a tribute built from wood salvaged by Red Simpson’s son—at the Kern County Museum under the recovered Trout’s sign. - ➤ Today, CSUB opens its first Black Student Success Center to support Black students, offering tutoring, scholarships, and academic guidance—help that aims to boost graduation and retention rates.
