  • Local food providers said that state and federal spending cuts forced CAPK to warn of a future reduction in resources for distributing 2 million pounds of food monthly to county families. USDA cancellations and cuts to CalFresh will reduce support by about $6 million a year—while food banks already face double-length lines.  KGET

CRIME NEWS

  • Dennis Ghianuly, a 33-year-old repeat offender, was convicted by a jury trial for stealing dog food and possessing fentanyl following Prop 36—he now faces over seven years in prison with sentencing set for June 27.  KGET
  • Alan Booth, 73, is accused of driving drunk and hitting three people during the Bakersfield Christmas Parade—his trial has been postponed to July 21 due to a defense expert's unavailability—and he remains in custody at Lerdo Jail without bail while pleading not guilty to several charges.  KGET
  • Investigators arrested three individuals in Northridge for alleged EBT fraud after a search at a home on White Oak Avenue—authorities seized cloned cards and over $40,000, with one suspect previously arrested in December for similar charges.  Bakersfield Now

  • Senator Melissa Hurtado held a press conference in Bakersfield to introduce Senate Bill 556 that supported floodplain restoration, improved flood safety, and boosted groundwater recharge in Kern, Kings, and Tulare counties.
