  • Garces Memorial High hosted a cardboard canoe race that combined fun, competition and fundraising to support school programs and brought together students and local residents.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • City leaders dedicated upgrades to Wilson Park on Friday, Mar. 27 that cost $30,000 from the general fund, including new playground equipment, repairs to benches and sidewalks, and a new four-foot fence for children with autism at 2400 Wilson Road.  Bakersfield Now
  • Families gathered in east Bakersfield at Dr. Martin Luther King Park on Friday for the annual Eggstravaganza, where kids enjoyed an Easter egg hunt, treats, and fun activities with a visit from the Easter Bunny while adults offered ideas as the city seeks new funding for park upgrades.  Bakersfield Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Kern County Fire crews battled a vegetation fire that started yesterday at 3:30 p.m. along Cottonwood Road and East Pacheco Road, closing the roads (acreage burned remains unknown) as officials investigate the cause.  Bakersfield Now

  • A business owner in Arvin is updating a mural by replacing Cesar Chavez’s portrait with Saint Isidore the Laborer to honor farmworkers. Artist Ernesto Aguilar began painting this few days ago & the mayor clarified that the city is not involved.  23ABC News
  • Jason McGee, a Bakersfield native, is set to perform his new album and share his journey of overcoming depression at Greater Harvest Christian Church today. The recording artist aims to encourage local individuals to seek help (with available mental health resources across Kern County).  23ABC News

  • Bakersfield College’s Marketing and Public Relations team earned national recognition on Thursday, March 26 when it received a Gold award in the Social Media Post (Story) category at the NCMPR Paragon Awards in Washington DC. HEALTH NEWS

  • Johnnie Smith (75) was hospitalized after a medical transport service dropped him off outside his home in nearly 90-degree heat on Saturday, March 21, and his family said he was left unattended for over an hour. He is now receiving treatment for heat stroke and severe burns.  23ABC News

  • Todd Lee was introduced as the new head coach for CSUB's men's basketball team on Friday at a press conference. He brings decades of collegiate coaching experience and helped the Roadrunners win a Division II national championship in 1997 (serving at USC, CSUB, and other programs).  23ABC News
