  • Crews are building a splash pad, installing fencing for a future dog park, and adding a new entrance sign at Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area; the improvements will be complete in time for summer.  23ABC News
  • Angelica (8-year-old pitbull) is available for adoption today at OceanRay Rescue after being cared for by founder Tara Nelson for eight months; she is housebroken, gets along with other dogs, and manages arthritis with medication.  23ABC News
  • Girl Scout Camryn Carbajal completed her Silver Award by building a blessing box that will be placed at the Beale Memorial to help anyone in need. The box will hold non-perishables, dog food, blankets and hygiene items while her troop and family supported the year-long project.  23ABC News
  • Olivia, 8, and Sophia, 9 from the Monsibais family ran a lemonade stand early Wednesday morning at Dagny’s Coffee downtown — they then used their father’s 1960 Ford pickup to deliver dog food to homeless pups.  The Bakersfield Californian

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association shows a decline in pedestrian fatalities across California (Kern County fatalities dropped 46.5% this half-year), and attorney Tanya Alsheikh credited better education with helping drivers notice pedestrians.  Bakersfield Now
  • All northbound lanes of Highway 99 are closed this morning as authorities respond to a person holding onto the railing on the Olive Drive overpass; drivers are exiting at Airport Drive + fire crews with an inflatable jump pad are on scene while southbound lanes remain open until conditions change.  23ABC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Archibald Brabazon Sparrow Acheson, the 4th Earl of Gosford who helped crown Edward the VII, bought 640 acres southwest of Bakersfield around 1891 and developed a small farm that later saw a rail station named in his honor — his legacy endures on Gosford Road.  KVPR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A free teen driver safety class is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14 at 6 p.m. at the CHP Buttonwillow office at 29449 Stockdale Highway to teach safe driving skills for teens and their families; registration is available by calling (661) 679-0300 as space is limited.  Bakersfield Now
  • Today, the Bakersfield City School District Education Foundation partners with Black Angus Steakhouse to host a one-day fundraiser for students at the Rosedale Highway location, where up to 20% of proceeds will benefit classroom grants & educational programs.  23ABC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters battled the quickly spreading Paramount Fire that reached 1,000 acres near 25th Ave and Interstate 5 in Kings County yesterday. No structures were threatened, and crews from Fresno and Kern counties plus Avenal State Prison assisted as CAL FIRE continues investigating the cause.  Bakersfield Now

  • Arvin received a $700,000 grant to upgrade Veterans Hall and launch bilingual fentanyl education workshops. The first session is planned for this spring to help community members learn about fentanyl dangers.  23ABC News
