  • Orlie’s Shoe Drive provided over 3,000 pairs of shoes to children across Kern County this year. The nonprofit hand-measures and delivers each pair, now serving over 10,000 kids locally.  23ABC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Delano school board voted 3 to 2 to form a committee — that will choose a new high school name from a list of ten options dating to 2002 after community input on allegations tied to Cesar Chavez, with board members split on whether to act quickly.  Bakersfield Now
  • The board of Cesar E. Chavez High School in Delano voted 3-to-2 Tuesday to change its name after allegations of abuse surfaced in a report. A committee will choose from 10 names that were proposed in 2002.  KUZZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts in Kern County met at a conference today in Bakersfield to discuss the risks of abandoned oil wells that leak methane and contaminate groundwater. The discussion focused on technical solutions and urged community reports of unplugged wells.  23ABC News

  • At Meadows Field, TSA officers continue to work without pay as the federal shutdown enters its sixth week; officials report that despite staffing challenges nationwide, lines stay efficient and donations arrive (from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.) to support the team.  Bakersfield Now
  • The Kern County Board of Supervisors approved the state's largest solar project on Tuesday, a 2-gigawatt installation that is expected to create 1,300 construction jobs in the area.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • Federal housing rules may soon require adults who are not disabled to work or train 40 hours a week to retain Section 8 benefits, leaving thousands of local families worried about housing stability & local housing officials say the changes remain optional but may limit future vouchers.  23ABC News

  • Bakersfield College hosted its first-ever home beach volleyball matches on March 16 at its new courts, defeating Cuesta College 3-2 and Glendale 4-1 while the team extended its win streak to five — fans can watch upcoming free events online.  Bakersfield College
  • CSUB women's soccer head coach Whitney Pitalo stepped down to pursue other opportunities, the Cal State Bakersfield Athletics Department announced Tuesday (she joined the team in Feb. 2025) and interim head coach Martin Navarro Jr. will lead the squad through the end of the calendar year.  23ABC News
