  • The KCSO Sheriff's Activities League has renovated its youth facility to offer sports, mentoring, and educational activities (boxing, cheer, jiu-jitsu, art, study, and podcasting) available Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and with youth cheer practices on Mondays.  23ABC News

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities executed a warrant at a property in Lake Hughes, rescuing 700 dogs & cats in what is reported as the largest animal seizure case in the U.S. with veterinary staff assessing the animals and taking those needing urgent care to local hospitals.  Bakersfield Now

  • A new study from University of California, Santa Cruz questions if the $20 pay for fast food workers is hurting employment as businesses cut shifts, raise menu prices, and turn to automation; one Central Valley McDonald’s saw employee hours drop by over 11.5% after the law took effect.  Bakersfield Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • California State University, Bakersfield’s College Corps program gives around 80 students a chance to serve local organizations while earning up to $10,000 in stipends by committing 450 hours during the school year. Applications for 100 new positions are due by June 1.  23ABC News

  • Adventist Health Bakersfield has invited four new doctors to join its residency program for the second year; among them is Dr. Sagar Mehta (a Pomona native) who will begin training at the hospital.  The Bakersfield Californian
